Class 1 — Mathematics

Patterns, Day & Night, and Coins

Class 1

  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to identify and extend simple repeating patterns.
  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to differentiate between day and night and associate common activities with each.
  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to recognise common Indian coins (1, 2, 5, 10 Rupees) and their values.
  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to count small amounts of money using Indian coins.

Key concepts

Patterns

A pattern is something that repeats again and again in the same way. It can be shapes, colours, numbers, or pictures. We look for the part that repeats to understand the pattern.

Day

Day is the time when the Sun is in the sky. It is bright and we can see clearly. During the day, we usually go to school, play outside, and do many activities.

Night

Night is the time when the Sun is not in the sky. It is dark, and we can see the Moon and stars. During the night, we usually sleep and rest.

Indian Coins

In India, we use Rupees as our money. Coins are round pieces of metal money. We have different coins like 1 Rupee, 2 Rupees, 5 Rupees, and 10 Rupees. Each coin has a different value written on it.

Key facts to remember

  • 1Patterns are sequences that repeat in a predictable way.
  • 2The Sun is visible during the day, making it bright.
  • 3The Moon and stars are visible at night, making it dark.
  • 4We use Indian Rupee coins for money.
  • 5Common Indian coins are 1 Rupee, 2 Rupees, 5 Rupees, and 10 Rupees.
  • 6To find the total value of coins, we add their individual values.

Worked examples

Example 1

Complete the pattern: Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Circle, _____, _____

I1. Observe the given shapes: Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Circle.
II2. Identify the repeating part of the pattern. The shapes 'Triangle, Circle' repeat.
III3. After 'Circle', the pattern starts again with 'Triangle'.
IV4. After 'Triangle', the pattern continues with 'Circle'.

Answer

Triangle, Circle

Always look for the part that repeats to find the rule of the pattern.

Example 2

Look at the picture. Is it day or night? (Imagine a picture showing a child playing with a ball under a bright sun.)

I1. Observe the picture carefully.
II2. Notice the bright Sun in the sky.
III3. Notice the child is playing outside.
IV4. Playing outside under the bright Sun happens during the day.

Answer

Day

Think about what you see in the sky and what activities usually happen at that time.

Example 3

How much money is this? (Imagine a picture showing one 5 Rupee coin and one 2 Rupee coin.)

I1. Identify the first coin: It is a 5 Rupee coin.
II2. Identify the second coin: It is a 2 Rupee coin.
III3. To find the total money, add the values of the coins: 5 Rupees + 2 Rupees.
IV4. 5 + 2 = 7.

Answer

7 Rupees

Always check the number written on each coin to know its value before adding.

Common mistakes

  • ✗Students sometimes guess the next element in a pattern instead of finding the repeating unit.
  • ✗Confusing activities that typically happen during the day with those that happen at night.
  • ✗Not correctly identifying the value of a coin, leading to incorrect counting of money.

Exam tips

  • ★For patterns, always look for the smallest part that repeats itself.
  • ★When identifying day or night, look for clues like the Sun, Moon, stars, or typical activities shown.
  • ★Carefully read the number printed on each coin to know its exact value before adding.
