  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to understand percentages as a special type of fraction (parts per hundred).
  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to calculate the percentage of a given value (Prozentwert).
  • ✓By the end of this lesson students will be able to solve practical problems involving percentages, including finding the Prozentsatz.

Key concepts

Direkte Proportionalität

Two quantities are directly proportional if they increase or decrease in the same ratio. This means that if one quantity is multiplied by a factor, the other quantity is also multiplied by the same factor. The ratio of the two quantities remains constant.

y = k · x (wobei k der Proportionalitätsfaktor ist)
Dreisatz

The 'Dreisatz' (rule of three) is a method used to solve problems involving direct proportionality. It involves three known values to find a fourth unknown value. The typical approach is to first calculate the value for a single unit, and then scale it up to the desired number of units.

Prozente

A percentage (Prozent) is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word 'Prozent' means 'per hundred'. It is denoted by the percent sign (%). For example, 25 % means 25 out of 100.

p % = p/100
Grundwert (G)

The Grundwert is the total amount or the original value, which represents 100 %.

Prozentsatz (p %)

The Prozentsatz is the percentage rate, indicated by the number with the percent sign (%). It tells us how many parts per hundred are being considered from the Grundwert.

Prozentwert (W)

The Prozentwert is the part of the Grundwert that corresponds to the given Prozentsatz. It is the actual value calculated from the percentage.

W = (p/100) · G

Key facts to remember

Worked examples

Example 1

Answer

7 kg Äpfel kosten 10,50 €.

This is a classic Dreisatz problem. Always find the value for one unit first.

Example 2

Berechne 35 % von 180 €.

I1. Schritt: Prozentsatz als Bruch oder Dezimalzahl schreiben.
II 35 % = 35/100 = 0,35
III2. Schritt: Prozentsatz mit dem Grundwert multiplizieren.
IV 0,35 · 180 € = 63 €

Answer

35 % von 180 € sind 63 €.

Example 3

VI 0,6 · 100 % = 60 %

Answer

60 % der Schüler haben ein Haustier.

Here, 20 is the Grundwert and 12 is the Prozentwert. We are looking for the Prozentsatz.

Common mistakes
